With the legacy of the Ride for Clean Energy not far behind us, Foundation members Eric Rush, Carl McBeath and Sean McBeath decided to take on a 24-hour riding challenge to raise money for the Foundation, in lieu of the Ride this summer. On August 12-13, they raced against the clock in a relay format, each tackling one hour at a time, from 8 AM to 8 AM, in an attempt to get as many kilometers under their belt as possible.

Supporters pledged to donate based on the total kilometers ridden (e.g., $/km) over the 24 hr period. An outpouring of support was felt, which motivated the boys to pedal extra hard. Much to the pain of Eric, Carl and Sean’s legs, the expected total kilometers (700 km) was greatly exceeded, with a grand total of 802.6 km rode!

Based on the pledges made prior to the ride, the grant total raised was…

$9075

Eric, Carl and Sean, as well as everyone at the Tyler Lewis Clean Energy Research Foundation would like to thank everyone supported and donated to the 24 Hour Ride for Clean Energy. The money raised is nearly enough to fund one whole grant, which helps a graduate student pursue important and innovative research in the area of clean energy.

The Ride For Clean Energy

The Ride for Clean Energy was an annual charity ride that fundraised money for The Tyler Lewis Clean Energy Research Foundation – a non-profit organization that annually awards at least one $10,000 grant to research projects in the field of clean energy and sustainability. The Ride for Clean Energy, and The Tyler Lewis Clean Energy Research Foundation, was founded after the tragic death of Tyler Lewis. Tyler, an unwavering eco-advocate, was studying chemical engineering at the University of British Columbia in the field of clean energy at the time of his passing. After 10 annual rides, amassing over $180,000 for clean energy research, the Ride for Clean Energy had its final ride in 2022. Determined to keep the spirit of Tyler’s advocacy for sustainability alive and continue to fund clean energy research, three of Tyler’s friends, Eric Rush and Carl & Sean McBeath, have started The 24 Hour Ride For Clean Energy.

The 24 Hour Ride For Clean Energy 2023

On August 12-13, 2023, Eric, Carl and Sean will be racing the clock to see how far they can consecutively ride within 24 hours. They will be relaying off in 1-hour intervals for 24 hours in Maple Ridge in an attempt to fundraise money for The Tyler Lewis Clean Energy Foundation. The further they are able to ride, the more money they are hoping to raise. The tyler Lewis Clean Energy Research Foundation

All of the proceeds from The Ride For Clean Energy go towards funding grants that The Tyler Lewis Clean Energy Research Foundation [TLCERF] awards every year. The TLCERF awards at least one $10,000 grant to an eligible student researching a project in the field of clean energy.
The Tyler Lewis Clean Energy Research Foundation was created in 2013 after the sudden passing of Tyler Lewis, a PhD candidate in the field of sustainable energy at the University of British Columbia. Along with being an avid outdoors-man, Tyler was an advocate for sustainable energy research and environmental preservation. Tyler had a personal commitment to conserve and sustain the natural state of our environment. He lived this philosophy daily in his activities and academic research.
The Tyler Lewis Clean Energy Research Foundation has been established by his parents, in loving memory of Tyler G. P. Lewis, to fund alternative energy and applied sustainability research initiatives. Tyler grew up in rural British Columbia and was taught the importance of environmental awareness from a young age. Tyler recognized the world’s impending energy crisis and had a strong “desire to leave this planet in a better position for future generations”. Tyler believed that as an engineer, “it is our duty to address global issues, such as climate change, in a manner that is environmentally and socially sound.” – Tyler G. P. Lewis

the route

The route for the 24 Hour Ride For Clean Energy will consist of laps in the Glen Valley region of Langley, BC. Each rider will complete as many laps as possible during their one hour segment.

Eric, Carl and Sean are looking for your donations to help fundraise for The Tyler Lewis Clean Energy Research Foundation. Want to be a donor and receive a tax receipt for your contribution? All you have to do is pledge to pay for each kilometer the team is able to ride within the 24 hours. Want to pay $0.10 for every kilometer they ride? How about $5?…or maybe even $20? Whatever you are comfortable with, it will be greatly appreciated. Though they don’t know how many kilometers they will be able to do within the 24 hours, they are aiming for 600 km.
